Kakae
Pronounced kak-eye, or something close to that.
Kakae is both the verb ‘to eat’ and the noun for ‘food’.
As in –
“what do you want to kakae for lunch today?”
or
"What kind of kakae do you prefer – roasted flying fox or boiled taro?” (neither, thanks!)
Vanuatu is a pretty good place for kakae. Locally grown organic beef and locally caught tuna keeps the carnivores very very happy and for most of the year trees are laden with plump papayas, bananas and pamplemousses. There is an incredible mango and avocado season in summer, a bush raspberry season in October and when the pineapples are ripe, they are out of this world. The local markets have a pretty good selection of veggies too.
We are trying our hand and growing our own kakae. Romain has made us this awesome veggie patch and planted zucchinis, cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, pumpkin, tomatoes, capsicum and a smattering of herbs. Hopefully we will be able to kakae all this super-duper kakae by Christmas!
